An original contemporary African ballet, Makulu uses animal allegories to celebrate the value of family and community. Makulu, which means ‘strong woman chief’ in Zulu, follows a wildebeest separated from the herd in her courageous quest to return home with her newborn calf. The show is about family, love and miracles, universal ideals seen in all cultures. The Company’s preview will conclude with an opportunity for dialogue with the artists about the presented works and the process of dance making.  “As an education and incubation center for evolving perspectives in dance,” says Executive Director Craig W. Johnson, “it’s important to introduce the community to contemporary dance in ways that extend beyond the traditional stage.” The Works-in-Process Series has showcased more than 100 new, experimental and repertory dance works and allows audiences to discover more about what motivates the creative process and become acquainted with some of the area’s finest dance artists.
