We’ve talked a bit on this blog about summer intensives and programs. Often, students leave home and travel to studios and companies to take part in these special opportunities. But what about students who are too young or maybe just not ready for these experiences? Summer dance camps are a great way to prepare your young dancer for that transition by acclimating them to the demands of a summer program, a little at a time.
The Center for Contemporary Dance is offering such a camp, beginning June 2-August 15. Students ages 6-13 can participate in daily dance, voice and acting classes in preparation for a weekly performance number. You can sign up for single weeks or the entire summer – it’s up to you.
The flexible commitment also makes this kind of camp an excellent choice for new students who are considering starting dance or arts training.
The Dance & Arts Camp at CCD is also a little unique in that it’s not just about dance for these students. They’ll also have those daily opportunities for voice and acting coaching, something not all dance students normally have exposure to.
Daily Camp Schedule:
7:30am: Early drop-off (optional)
9:00am: Ballet class (fundamental dance training)
10:00am: Voice class (coaching in voice & learning a selection)
Noon: Acting class (coaching in theater & learning a scene)
1:30pm: Dance class (themed by week; jazz, hip hop, etc.)
3:00pm: Rehearsal for weekly showcase (themed by week)
4:30pm: End of camp day and standard pick-up
6:00pm: Late pick-up (optional)
Each week of camp is themed and each week, campers will create a corresponding song, dance and theater number. Students showcase their work at 3:00 p.m. each Friday.
Weekly Camp Themes:
June 2-6: Broadway I: Legends and Heroes
June 9-13: Wizards and Magic Makers
June 16-20: Motown Soul
June 23-27: Hip Hop Funk I
June 30-July 3: America the Beautiful
July 7-11: Broadway II: Make ‘em Laugh
July 14-18: School of Rock
July 21-25: Off to Nashville
July 28-August 1: Dreams of Africa
August 4-8: Broadway III: Creatures of Imagination
August 11-15: Hip Hop Funk II
There is no camp on Friday, July 4. That week’s showcase will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3. There are no additional costs or fees to participate in the showcase. There are also no costumes to buy – dancers will wear their classroom attire. The showcase is open to friends, family and the general public.
