Another week, another round of So You Think You Can Dance. I feel like this season has started a little slow….after a big first week, with everyone dancing in their own styles, each of the subsequent weeks have failed to live up to that excitement. My prediction remains that the inclusion of the all-stars will be a game-changer.
What stood out to me this week:
- Jacque and Zack’s hip hop was a nice palette-cleanser from some of the hip hop styles we normally see on this show, and one of SYTYCD’s strong points is that they’ve been very deliberate about showcasing the diversity of dance. I also thought they danced it well.
- Valerie and Ricky’s Viennese Waltz was lovely and captivating the way ballroom is meant to be. His lines are impeccable and the choreography was perfect for them. It was also a great example of wardrobe contributing to the overall effect of a performance. Her dress was perfection….not simply because it was beautiful or reminiscent of a fairy tale, but because it complemented and enhanced the movement.
- Jessica and Stanley’s Jazz number was a tall order for them. The high-concept nature of the piece with the theme, costuming and music didn’t gel for me, but I felt like we saw the dancers trying really hard to bring it together. I thought they were given spot-on critiques and I hope Jessica takes hers and is able to show an audience the difference in performing/being an artist vs putting on a face over top of the emotion. I’m sorry we won’t get to see Stanley work to apply his notes. I feel like he had much more room to grow in the competition.
What did you think? Am I overlooking a standout performance?
