The Center for Contemporary Dance will host A Day of Dance for local foster families on Saturday, August 30, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is free of charge and open to all household members between 2 and 17 years of age.

A Day of Dance is comprised of a variety of dance classes that will be held throughout the day. These classes will be introductory level – no prior experience required – and are conducted in accordance with national standards. No special attire is needed, just a comfortable black t-shirt or leotard and black athletic shorts or leggings; sneakers will be required for hip hop classes.

Why is CCD doing this?
The Center for Contemporary Dance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, unlike a for-profit school or studio, with a stated mission of providing quality dance and arts opportunities to under-served local communities.

“Accessibility is a cornerstone value of our organization,” says Executive Director Craig W. Johnson, “Dance is for everybody and we’re excited to introduce foster parents to resources that will allow the children they care for to continue attending class with us at no cost to the family.”

Additionally, the organization has found that foster families who attend weekly dance classes view them as an important part of a child’s developmental and therapeutic regimen.

Colleen Delgado has 6 children who have been regularly attending classes at The Center for Contemporary Dance since 2011. She shared that they are learning skills that translate into improvement in other areas, including discipline, self-respect and confidence-building, as well as finding “creative fulfillment and an additional pathway to productively express emotions.”

A foster care resource expert will also be available at A Day of Dance to assist parents in securing funding to fully cover the cost of ongoing dance classes for foster children.

“The Center for Contemporary Dance is a place where everyone is welcome, where everyone has significance,” says Craig, “We will continue to add classes that are designed to inclusively meet the needs of our community.”
