Why is CCD doing this?
The Center for Contemporary Dance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, unlike a for-profit school or studio, with a stated mission of providing quality dance and arts opportunities to under-served local communities.
“Accessibility is a cornerstone value of our organization,” says Executive Director Craig W. Johnson, “Dance is for everybody and we’re excited to introduce foster parents to resources that will allow the children they care for to continue attending class with us at no cost to the family.”
Additionally, the organization has found that foster families who attend weekly dance classes view them as an important part of a child’s developmental and therapeutic regimen.
Colleen Delgado has 6 children who have been regularly attending classes at The Center for Contemporary Dance since 2011. She shared that they are learning skills that translate into improvement in other areas, including discipline, self-respect and confidence-building, as well as finding “creative fulfillment and an additional pathway to productively express emotions.”
A foster care resource expert will also be available at A Day of Dance to assist parents in securing funding to fully cover the cost of ongoing dance classes for foster children.
“The Center for Contemporary Dance is a place where everyone is welcome, where everyone has significance,” says Craig, “We will continue to add classes that are designed to inclusively meet the needs of our community.”
