The Center for Contemporary Dance is excited to announce its Dance Matters Essay Contest, with the goal of inspiring imaginative thinking about how dance can make a positive impact on families and communities.
The contest is open to Orange and Seminole County students in grades K-12, and the winners will each receive a one-year scholarship (valued at $1,000) to attend a weekly dance class of their choice at CCD.
How to Enter
Students in grades 3-12 must write an essay of 200 words or less that creatively and thoughtfully answers the question: Why does dance matter to you and how can it build community?
Younger students (grades K-2) may instead submit shorter statements and artwork in response to the question, rather than a full essay.
Additionally, the submitted materials MUST:
- be original and created by the entrant
- include the following information in the upper left hand corner of the submission in this format & order:
- Line 1: Full name, age and grade level
- Line 2: Complete school name and county
- Line 3: Contact phone number or e-mail address
- be emailed or postmarked by Monday, December 1, 2014.

Note: To be eligible for this contest, the student must be an Orange or Seminole County student in grades K-12.
Four winners will be selected by a panel of 10 judges that includes educators, executives and professional artists. One winner will be selected from each of the following grade groups:
- Kindergarten to grade 2
- Grades 3 to 5
- Grades 6 to 8
- Grades 9 to 12
Winners will receive a one-year scholarship valued at $1,000 to attend a weekly dance class at The Center for Contemporary Dance, be featured along with their essay or artwork in promotional campaigns for the organization’s Give Kids the Arts initiative, and receive 4 VIP tickets to any upcoming performance listed on the 2014-2015 season of dance.
Winners will be notified by phone or e-mail on Saturday, December 13, 2014.
