In the spirit of “Follow Friday”, I’d like to share a cool site that I follow and a resource I came across on strength training for dancers.
Monika Volkmar is a former professional dancer turned personal trainer who runs The Dance Training Project, dedicated to (you guessed it) “educating dancers on the importance of strength training for injury prevention, improved technical execution, and overall health and well-being.”
This week she published her super exciting/interesting presentation on Training the Athletic Dancer and is making it available for free! I thought it was a really interesting read.
Some key points that I took away from the report:
- Studies have shown that performing dance in itself elicits only limited stimuli for positive fitness adaptations; professional dancers often demonstrate fitness values similar to those obtained from healthy sedentary individuals of comparable age.
- There is a strong correlation between strength, power and aesthetic competence.
- Strength training is proven to prevent injuries. The injury rate for ballet dancers over an eight-month period was 61% – a rate comparable to rates found in other studies for athletes in collision sports such as football and wrestling.
Check out Monika’s site and let me know what you thought in the comments section!
