The Center for Contemporary Dance will present its summer concert, Broadway Our Way!, on Sunday, June 7 at Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, reinterpreting songs from the New York stage through diverse dance styles that include ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern and tap.
The concert’s concept aligns perfectly with the school’s goal of leveraging each and every school performance as an opportunity to further prepare young artists for industry success.
“Many dancers aspire to secure a role on the New York stage,” says Craig W. Johnson, Executive Director of The Center for Contemporary Dance, “This performance gives our faculty the chance to introduce students to the history and music of Broadway while supplementing their education in performance quality and dance for the stage.”
Dance works include those set to music from Annie, Cats, Barnum, Wicked, The Lion King, Les Misérables, The Color Purple and many more. Selections from the organization’s professional ensembles include performances by Moore Dance Project, Dawn Branch Works, Coby Project and Explore Theatre & Dance Company.
But “Broadway Our Way! isn’t just dance set to Broadway music,” explains Dario J. Moore, Artistic Director for The Center for Contemporary Dance and lead choreographer for the show. “Choreographers were asked to reinvent a piece of Broadway music from a fresh perspective, without limiting themselves to the characters and story found in the musical that inspired the dance.”
What emerged, explains Moore, is a brand new set of themes, characters and experiences that happen to share a soundtrack with their original Broadway counterpart.
“Broadway is big and bold,” says Moore, “Even in moments when Broadway performers are exploring the more subtle complexities of a character, they are invested in taking big risks. This is the message we are teaching our artists to understand–find your own way and proceed with confidence. It’s the risk takers that achieve excellence on the stage and in life.”
Broadway Our Way! features a diverse cast of more than 80 students, pre-professionals and professionals, with dance works choreographed by faculty members and artists from The Center for Contemporary Dance, including Artistic Director Dario J. Moore, Dawn Stewart-Branch, Jennia Shanley, Douglas Horne, Janelle de Ment, Margo Blake, Olivia Gale, Shatonya Bryant, Nikki Peña and Christoper Gonzalez. Proceeds benefit the organization’s cornerstone campaign to Give Kids the Arts!, which annually provides more than 5,000 at-risk youth access to free dance education experiences.
