It’s that time of year when everyone is thinking about back to school. Most dance schools follow a school calendar & amend their schedules for the summer. Same thing for professional dance companies – a season of dance more closely mimics the school calendar than a standard one, starting in January. The back to school season is really more like dance New Year!
I love the energy and excitement of a “new year” – it’s common for students to level up at this time (although mid-year progression happens too) and for new students and faculty to start at an organization, which means new classmates, new teachers and new skills. It’s also a time to reflect and to focus. To determine new goals, new aspirations and commit to them. That’s powerful stuff! Setting your intentions with honesty is a great predictor of success.
Here are things I would consider for Dance New Year:
- Am I in the right place? The right school can make all the difference in your trajectory…and sometimes the “right” place changes. As you grow and mature as a dancer, you may find that switching or adding schools is the best decision to ensure that you keep growing and are pushed to your highest potential. Here are a few thought on how to choose a dance school.
- Do I have goals? Goals are important. Not just because you need something to strive toward, but because goal setting means that you’re thinking about where you are, what you’d like to achieve and how to get there. That kind of mental exercise is extremely important to your dancing. Your goals should also be SMART – learn how.
- Which brings me to your dance journal. If you’re already keeping one, do you like what you’re doing? Does the format work for you? Does it inspire you and keep you accountable? If not, how can you make that better? If you’re not already keeping a dance journal, you should be! Here’s how.
Best of luck to everyone starting a new dance year! Let’s keep dancing together!
