The Center for Contemporary Dance’s will present its summer concert, Broadway Our Way!, on Sunday, June 19 at Oviedo High School. Featuring students of all ages and CCD’s pre-professional dancers, the concert includes dance works set to music from The Wiz, Cats, West Side Story, Contact, Footloose, The Sound of Music and more.
“Broadway Our Way! isn’t just dance set to Broadway music,” explains Dario J. Moore, who serves as Artistic Director for The Center for Contemporary Dance. “Choreographers were asked to reinvent a piece of Broadway music from a fresh perspective, without limiting themselves to the characters and story found in the musical that inspired the dance.”
What emerged, Moore elaborated, is a brand new set of themes, characters and experiences that happen to share a soundtrack with their original Broadway counterpart.
Broadway Our Way! boasts a diverse cast of more than 80 dancers, utilizing different styles of dance including ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern and tap, with choreography by CCD faculty members and artists. Moore, along with Director of Education Ingrid Lozano, Dawn Stewart-Branch, Ellie Potts-Barrett, Director of Competitive Studies Christina Benziger, Sam Sinns, Margo Blake, Andrea Preciado, David Gabriel, Shatonya Bryant, Jeanine Sawin, Smruti Patel and Nikki Peña, have all choreographed work specifically for this summer concert.
“Many dancers in our Pre-Professional Musical Theatre Program aspire to secure a role on the New York stage,” says Craig W. Johnson, Executive Director of The Center for Contemporary Dance, “This performance gives our faculty the chance to introduce students to the history and music of Broadway while supplementing their education in performance quality and dance for the stage.”
The goal, Johnson explains, is to leverage each and every school performance as an opportunity to further prepare young artists for industry success.
“Broadway is big and bold,” says Moore, “Even in moments when Broadway performers are exploring the more subtle complexities of a character, they are invested in taking big risks. This is the message we are teaching our artists to understand–find your own way and proceed with confidence. It’s the risk takers that achieve excellence on the stage and in life.”
Proceeds benefit the organization’s cornerstone campaign to Give Kids the Arts!, which annually provides more than 5,000 at-risk youth access to free dance education experiences.
